The Stock Market Game
The Stock Market Game™
The Stock Market Game™ program is an online education program used in thousands of classrooms nationwide to help teach core subjects like math, social studies, technology, business, economics and language skills in a real-world application while emphasizing the importance of long-term saving and investing. In Illinois, the SMG program has engaged more than 610,000 students since it was introduced in 1988.
Students in grades 4-12 work together in teams to manage and grow a simulated investment portfolio during various sessions throughout the school year. In building their portfolio, students research and evaluate stocks, bonds and mutual funds and make decisions based upon their learning. To understand a stock or overall market’s performance, students need to learn how the economy works. To understand and calculate how their portfolio performs, they need to do the math. Students who participate in The Stock Market Game™ program learn more than investing - they gain an education for life.
Teachers can incorporate a variety of Stock Market Game’s lessons and activities, correlated to Common Core Standards, to teach and reinforce essential skills and concepts in a fun and innovative way. The Stock Market Game is flexible and designed so students and teachers learn as they go. After initially introducing The Stock Market Game to their students, teachers can choose how much class time to devote to portfolio management.
Core SMG lessons are available in both English and Spanish. See these examples:
InvestWrite is a national writing competition encouraging critical thinking skills while reinforcing concepts learned in the classroom. Students respond to a question or prompt on investing with a brief essay. National and state awards include mini-computers, trophies and gift cards.
The Cabrera Statewide Award is given each school year to the top ranked team in grades 4-8 and 9-12. This award is made possible by funding from Cabrera Capital Markets, LLC. Winning teams visit the Chicago Financial District. Students also receive a cash award for beginning an investment account; teachers receive a professional development scholarship.
Capitol Hill Challenge
Capitol Hill Challenge is a special edition of the SMG program provided by SIFMA Foundation. Offered each spring, Members of Congress are matched with SMG teams in their district. The top ranked teams from across the U.S. travel to Washington D.C. in June to receive awards on Capitol Hill.
