International partnerships expand!
Economic Education reaches across the border
The Illinois Council on Economic Education hosted two guests
from the newly formed Mexican Council on Economic and Financial
Education for three days in April. MCEEF Executive
Director Jaime Velazquez and Dr. Roberto Escalante from the Universidad
Nacional Autonoma De Mexico (which will host the first Center
for Economic Education in Mexico) came to meet with ICEE Board
members, Illinois education leaders, and members of the ICEE
staff to learn about board structure, program initiatives and
fund raising strategies as they initiate the work of their new
Council.
The Mexican Council was formally established in February 2007 as
a result of the work of the National Council on Economic Education
EconomicsInternational programs. These programs are part
of the Cooperative Education Exchange Program (CEEP) funded by
the U.S. Department of Education in cooperation with the Department
of State. ICEE and several of its affiliated Centers have
been actively involved in the NCEE EconomicsInternational programs
for many years through a variety of activities, including its International
Classroom Partnerships with schools in Romania; leadership of study
tours to other countries; and hosting guests here. Many Illinois
teachers have benefited from participation in study tours, the
Training-of-Writers program, and the classroom partnership program.
