Workshops, programs, graduate credit programs as well as a certificate in teaching economics are all available for teachers through the UIC Center for Economic Education. This unique and active ICEE Center provides many resources for K-12 teachers.

FTE Coming Soon to a Western Suburb!

The Environment and the Economy Institute: Sponsored by the Foundation for Teaching Economics, The Environment and The Economy is a FREE 4 - day residential program for middle and high school teachers designed to help integrate an understanding of environmental issues into classroom discussion. Focus of the program is to present an understanding of how market forces may be used to solve environmental issues. Two graduate credits are available. For detailed information on the program and how to register, go to the ICEE web site, workshop page.

One Week Summer Institute for Teachers

Plan on visiting Madison, Wisconsin for a week long residential teacher training, with teachers from all over the U.S! A limited number of seats are still available for any of the three available week-long courses. Teachers traveling 350 miles or more are eligible for a $400 travel stipend.

The three separate courses provide instruction and resources in the areas of personal finance, economics, saving and investing, insurance, credit and entrepreneurship. Three graduate credits are available for a fee upon completion of a training course. To learn more or to register, download the program brochure.

Virtual Economics ®: Version 3.0

Funding is still available for another teacher workshop this spring for Virtual Economics®: Version 3.0. Virtual Economics (VE) is sponsored by State Farm Insurance, and debuted at the 2005 NCEE Annual Conference. Council and UIC Center for Economic Education staff took part in the Virtual Economics Train-the-Trainer Workshops during the conference, enabling the scheduling of Spring 2006 workshops. If your school or district is interested in receiving this $99.95-value resource, without cost, please contact ICEE right away. Workshops can be provided onsite, tailored to highlight specific grade levels, or target subject/curriculum teams.

VE is designed for K-12 teachers as a resource tool for the social studies curriculum and for the integration of economics within the math, language arts, and science curricula. The resource is a comprehensive library of over 1,200 printable economic lessons, each user-friendly and accessible by searching for concept, grade level, curriculum piece, or subject area. Lessons have been correlated to state content standards, including Illinois State Goal 15.

Currently scheduled dates include:

Material is offered in varied formats, including Flash and PowerPoint, a glossary and on-line leader's manual for reference after the training. Workshops outside Chicago also feature instruction on the use of Blackboard online program, designed to complement the VE resource and direct teachers in their initial use for implementing lessons with their students. For additional information and a demo on the Virtual Economics CD, go the VE/NCEE web site.
