New Statewide Awards offered by Cabrera
Feb. 7, 2007: ICEE Trustee Martin Cabrera, CEO of Cabrera Capital Markets,
Inc., has provided funding for two new awards in ICEE's Stock Market
Game program statewide - the "Cabrera Statewide Awards."
Cabrera announced the new awards at the January 17 SMG awards reception at the Chicago Board Options Exchange. He congratulated the students and teachers being recognized, and said he hoped they continued to excel - so they might win the statewide recognition in the coming semester.
The high school team with the highest portfolio value in the state at the end of the Spring semester competition will receive a trip with their teacher to New York City, where they will visit the New York Stock Exchange, the offices of Securities Industries and Financial Markets Association, and enjoy other activities in the Big Apple.
The team in the Spring semester grades 4-8 competition with the highest portfolio value statewide will spend a day and a half in Chicago as guests of Cabrera Capital Markets and ICEE, visiting the floor of the Chicago Stock Exchange, ringing the opening bell, and visiting other sites of interest related to understanding savings and investing.
All teams participating during the spring session will be compared, regardless of their location. Schools participating in the City of Chicago will not see the values of teams outside Chicago - so bimonthly reports will be emailed to all participating teachers with a list of the top ten teams statewide, for each grade level competition. After final review of the portfolios, the winners will be announced by email on Wednesday, May 2.
Teams must abide by all the SMG rules, including the two Illinois rules. The first states that a team may not invest more than 30% of their equity in any one company. The second states that a team must invest in at least four different companies during the ten- to 15-weeks they maintain a portfolio in their class.
Cabrera, who participated in the SMG during his own high school days and changed his college major from architecture to business due to his high school economics class's involvement in the SMG, also sponsors the Spring semester SMG program in the City of Chicago.
"This program teaches young people how to invest and use their analytical skills, and it stimulates their interest in the world beyond their classroom," Cabrera says. "It made a tremendous difference in my professional and personal success; it can have the same impact on other kids, too.
