Dear Huskie Family Connections Member!

The following Huskie Minute features a few updates, events, and helpful tips to assist you and your student in having a safe and enjoyable fall semester. Beginning with the 2013 -2014 newly entering student group, ALL NIU families will begin receiving the Huskie Minute. Welcome to the Huskie Family!

Homecoming 2013 was a celebration to be remembered! The Huskie community wishes to extend a big THANKS to our Homecoming 2013 Parade Grand Marshal Family, Bill (1958 Alumnus)& Pat Hyde, Bill & Ingrid Hyde (both 1993 alumni), and William Hyde, future Alumnus 2016. The Lou & Kathy Faivre family offered their vintage vehicles and driving services to our Grand Marshal Family. Lou & Kathy have a few NIU connections of their own; a daughter who teaches at NIU and a granddaughter who is a student. So much to be proud of! 

Upcoming Career Events – Please Encourage Your Student to Attend!

Internship Fair (Oct. 22)
Full-time Job Fair (Oct. 23)

Apply what you have learned at one of the preparation workshops to the Internship Fair (October 22) and Full-Time Job Fair (October 23). Times for both programs run from 10 AM until 3 PM, are held at NIU’s Convocation Center (DeKalb). Admission is free and we encourage all NIU students to attend. Admission is free for all current NIU students to attend.
**Alumni: $5, Non-NIU: $10 (Fees for attendance)

Attendees are encouraged to be prepared by researching the companies, rehearsing elevator speeches, dressing professionally and bringing plenty of résumés. Current students also will submit copies of their résumés as admission into the events.

Use NIU’s job search system, Huskies Get Hired! This is where employers find new talent for jobs and internships, and where NIU students can create (using Resume Builder) upload their résumés and publish their résumés to résumé books. Visit to kick-start start your job and internship search.

Leadership Academy

Please encourage your student to attend the fall semester Leadership Workshops.  Each workshop will last approximately 2 hours. 

These workshops are a great way to expand your knowledge and understanding of leadership concepts, meet other students who are interested in leadership, and to engage in thought provoking conversations.  Be sure to join us this fall! Here are additional details on the workshops:

Spring Semester Registration and Your Student's Account

Registration for Spring 2014 begins the week of November 4, 2013. Students will be assigned registration appointments mid-October 2013. Registration appointments are assigned based on the number of cumulative hours. Beginning mid-October, students may check MyNIU for their appointment day and time. Students may register on or after the assigned appointment day and time as long as there are not any holds assigned to their record.

Either encourage your student to check their account via their MY NIU Student System or Center. Adult family members may access their student's MY NIU account ONLY with your student's approval. You will need your student's Z ID number and password. Go to My Student System and click self-service. Or, go to My Student Center to Finances.

The Office of the Bursar sends account statements to the student's permanent address of record each month via U.S. mail. It is sent to your student's name; therefore you need their permission to open their mail. It is the Office of the Bursar NOT Financial Aid that keeps the account information.
