Wow! Summer is just about over; they're really leaving for college. Thursday is Move In Day. Thursday will be physically and emotionally exhausting. Thursday will be exciting and filled with a little trepidation. Thursday will execute your best planned organization and will unleash a little chaos. Thursday will be liberating and committal. Thursday will be the day that has been hopefully anticipated and cautiously dreaded. On Thursday you will let go and you will hold on so tightly, for just one more minute.
Please know that we will experience Thursday, Move In day with you. We're here to help. Helping hands, strong backs, and golf carts will be available to help you move all those things. Come see us at Family Fair, filled with great NIU resources. We'll have valuable information and knowledgeable NIU staff. We'll have cold water and some snacks. We'll have chairs to rest upon! 4:00 - 5:00 pm in the Campus Recreation building. Look for the balloons and signs! We'll be looking out for you!
Move In Day is just the start of something big; Huskies are BIG dogs. Welcome Days is 4 days of events to help your new Huskie learn how to become a BIG dog. Block Parties, the Band Run, Academic Convocation, Glow in the Dark Dance Party, Saturday of Service are just a few of the events. Encourage your student to make the most of Huskie life by getting started on the right paw. For all the happenings, Welcome Days. http://www.niu.edu/studentinvolvement/welcomedays

Did your student participate in an internship this calendar year? They may qualify for a scholarship! Career Services acknowledges outstanding NIU students who have completed a career-related work experience. Seven internship/cooperative education students are selected throughout the scholarship award year, January to December 2013, and honored as an Internship/Cooperative Education Student of the Month. In February 2014, three of these seven students will be recognized as NIU Internship/Cooperative Education Student of the Year scholarship award recipients for 2013.

Huskie Family Connections Parents' Advisory Board offers these helpful tips to make Move In day a little easier. Between DeKalb and Sycamore lie the strip malls. Many major retailers are located here. 1)You can order many items online and have them delivered to the DeKalb or Sycamore location. Then, instead of packing them into the car at home, you can pick them up once you get here. 2)Or, you can wait until you arrive in the land of NIU to pick up asundry items. Sometimes, you don't know exactly what you'll need, or what size of an item will fit in the space. You can check out the room, move in what you've brought from home, and pick up the rest of the stuff here. 3)By seeking out the strip mall area, or any of the greater DeKalb area, you are helping your student become acclimated to their academic home. Most of the strip malls are on Sycamore Road, which is IL Rt. 23 between DeKalb and Sycamore. Downtown DeKalb is Lincoln Hwy., or IL Rt. 38. Downtown Sycamore is State St., or IL Rt. 64.
