On-Campus Fitness Programs

Fitness Challenge Program (FCP)

The Fitness Challenge Program, sponsored by the Employee Assistance Program, is a free campus program which allows employees an opportunity to work out and network with fellow employees in a smaller group setting. Classes are held in the Holmes Student Center during the lunch hour and is open to all university employees. Members must register to join the program.

No classes are scheduled at this time.

Note: The decision to release employees to attend classes during their regular work hours is at the discretion of the employing supervisor and shall take into account the operational needs of the department.

Fitness Images Today (FIT)

Located in Anderson Hall 127, is open to NIU employees, spouses/partners of employees, retirees, and residents of the surrounding communities over the age of 18.  FIT has a fee which can be paid through a payroll deduction. The staff is comprised primarily of graduate assistants trained in health and fitness, who are available to assist members.  Many of the FIT programs are held in Anderson Hall with a few held in Gabel.  For hours and classes call 815-753-0335 or email

FIT Services:

  •  Indoor pool for water exercise such as Deep Water Exercise, Water Aerobics, and lap swim
  •  Weight/cardiovascular room with treadmills, Stairmasters, upright and recumbent bikes, Nu-Steps, elliptical machines, rowers, and a variety of strength training equipment machines, resistance bands, exercise balls, free weights
  • Blood pressure screenings
  • Body composition analysis and flexibility testing
  • Individualized exercise prescription
  • Free locker and towel service
  • Group exercise classes such as Yoga/Pilates, Express Circuit, Circuit Challenge, Aerobic Fitness, and Indoor Cycling to name a few

Campus Recreation

Campus Recreation strives to be a leader in the recreation industry and an integral component of the campus community by providing excellence in recreation, student learning, and diverse opportunities. Facilities include the Student Recreation Center (SRC) and Chick Evans Field House (FH), plus an Adventure Center, New Hall Fitness Center (NH), Gilbert Hall Fitness Center (GH), Gable Pool (GA) and the Outdoor Recreation Sports Complex (ORSC), and two swimming pools at Gabel and Anderson Hall. Open Recreation, Fitness and Wellness, Outdoor Adventures, Intramural Sports, Sport Clubs, and Aquatics programs occur in these facilities, enabling patrons to engage in activities and learning opportunities that enhance personal health and well-being.
