Prohibited Items

Items that create danger to persons, damage to university property, a fire/safety hazard, and/ or a public nuisance must not be used, possessed, or stored in the residence halls (including student rooms). These include:

  • Internal combustion engines, acids, automobile batteries, gasoline, torches, and halogen desk lamps.
  • Weightlifting equipment, musical instruments equipped with amplifiers, or other instruments that carry sound beyond the confines of student’s room may be used only in designated areas of residence halls.
  • Bulk alcoholic beverage containers – exceeding 2 gallons, regardless of the age of the resident.
  • Animals, birds, amphibians or pets of any kind (exception: qualified service animals for individuals with disabilities). Fish are welcome to live with us.
  • Substances from which potentially offensive/ overpowering odors emanate (heavy perfumes, room scents, potpourri, sports/camping equipment, etc.).
  • Charcoal, fire starter materials, etc. Students may store grills (but not combustible fuels) in their room, but may not use them indoors. Barbecue grills must be at least 100 feet from any campus building when in use.
  • Bicycle racks are available outside of residence halls. Bicycles may not be parked anywhere inside a residence hall except in the student’s room with the agreement of the student’s roommate.

Room and Furniture Modifications

If you have a medical concern or special need that may be met by alteration of your room configuration, please do not hesitate to contact a member of the hall staff for clarification of policies or referral to the Residential Facilities team for individual attention.

  • Feel free to bring small personal items of furniture into your room (shelves, cabinets, end tables, chairs, lamps – halogen lamps are considered a safety hazard and prohibited) as space allows.
  • Furniture in each room is inventoried to that space. Do not remove the existing furniture in your room for any reason. (This includes the second bed in the double rooms that are contracted as temporary singles.).
  • Additional non-University issued beds may not be brought into or stored in your room. Waterbeds and other water filled furniture are prohibited.
