Northern View Community Apartments

About Northern View Community

Open in 2007, Northern View Community is NIU’s on-campus apartment alternative to traditional residence hall living for our older student population. Five apartment buildings, a spacious courtyard, and a Community Center with 24 hour access provide students who are 20 years or older, or 2 years post high school, and their dependents the opportunity to enjoy the comforts of individual apartments with the convenience of on-campus staff and resources.
Situated directly on NIU’s Huskie Bus line residents are just 1 mile from the academic campus region where they are close enough to class, but just far enough from the everyday hustle and bustle, noise, and busy roads.

The Apartments

Northern View Community has two different building types. Traditional buildings, 3 & 5, are similar to the residence halls in that, residents contract for their bed space only. Students contract for one bedroom in a single-gender, two-bedroom unit, they are typically placed with a random roommate, and these buildings do not accommodate dependents.

Buildings 2, 4, and 6, are known as the Family style buildings and have one, two, and three-bedroom units available. Here residents contract for the entire apartment, they are responsible for finding their own roommates, and are able to have non-NIU student dependents live with them, such as children, spouses and partners, so long as they fill out the appropriate paperwork. Therefore, it’s very likely you’ll run into many children and families in the community!

The Community Center

The Northern View Community Center houses the administrative offices, multipurpose room, game room, playroom & playground. These rooms are currently open Mon.- Fri. 8am-10pm (play areas until 8pm) and Sat. and Sun. 1pm-8pm. You can also reserve these areas for private use by filling out a request in the office.
There is also a 24-hour study lounge, a computer lab, and an Anywhere Printer. Just swipe your NIU OneCard at the west door when the building is locked.
The Northern View Community Center also houses an NIU Police Community Safety Center, providing the convenience of NIU Officer presence right in the Northern View community.
