Moving Out

All residence halls will close at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 13, 2017. Plan to leave your hall within 24 hours of your last final. If you need to stay more than 24 hours past your last final, contact your Complex Coordinator.

Students who are graduating should plan to be completely checked out two hours after their graduation ceremony and no later than 5:00 p.m.

Make a Checkout Appointment

Make a checkout appointment with your CA at least 24 hours before you plan to check out and no later than Thursday, May 11, 2017. Daily appointments will be made from 8:00 a.m. - 9:40 p.m.

Complete all items on the checkout checklist prior to your appointment. Your CA will be checking to make sure all necessary tasks are completed before you leave.

If you do not check out properly or do not make an appointment 24 hours in advance you will be charged a $50 improper check out fee.

Without a summer Housing contract you may not stay past 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 13, 2017.

Quiet Hours

24-hour quiet hours start Thursday, May 4, 2017 at 9 p.m. No noise should be heard outside of your room! There will be no warnings. You will be documented on your first violation during quiet hours. If you are documented for a policy violation during finals week you may be required to leave the residence halls immediately or after your last final depending on the situation.

See your Community Advisor, Hall Director, or contact the Work Request Office if you have questions about moving out.

  • Schedule appointment with your Community Advisor to check out
  • Update your permanent address for the summer on MyNIU
    Mail sent to your residence hall address will be forwarded to your permanent address in MyNIU. Update your address with NIU and anyone that sends you mail to avoid delays in receiving letters, bills and packages.


Leaving Items, Improper Check Out and Abandoned Belongings Storage: $50 in addition to charges for damaged or missing items

Disposal/Extended Storage Fee for Abandoned Belongings that are not picked up within 30 days: $100

Once you have checked out, staff will not be able to let you back into your room.

Trash and Cleaning

Clean your room—it should look the same way it did when you moved in.

  • Remove all trash from the room
    Large items should be put in dumpsters arriving on Wednesday, April 29. Small items may be thrown away in the trash room on your floor.
  • Sweep/vacuum your floor.
    When cleaning your room, do not push all the debris into the hallway; you are responsible for the area around your room. If there is an excessive amount of trash on your floor the CA may not be able to do any check-outs until the floor is cleaned.
  • Donate before throwing away! Any items in a reasonable shape to can go to Goodwill. Donation bins are in every residence hall’s lobby.

Charges will be assessed for missing parts, damaged or dirty units, freezers not defrosted, and other problems not caused by normal operation.

  • EMPTY all your food from the unit
  • UNPLUG the unit
  • DEFROST the freezer
  • CLEAN the entire unit
  • TILT BACK the unit
  • OPEN doors to the unit
  • LEAVE the extension cord

Room Temperature

  • New Hall, Grant, Gilbert & Stevenson North: Leave A/C on. Put thermostat on cool mode and set to 74°F.
  • Stevenson South Only: Leave Toggle Switch in the On-Position with the dial set in the middle
  • Neptune: N/A


  • Remember to follow all parking rules when moving out of the residence halls.
  • 30 minute move out parking is available:
    • Gilbert: Directly in front of Gilbert Hall
    • Grant: Across from Grant North Towers
    • Neptune: Outside of Neptune West and at the visitor pay lot (30 minute loading only)
    • New Hall: Across from the New Hall Community Center
    • Stevenson: Directly in front of Stevenson B and C Towers
  • Do not park in fire lanes, areas marked ‘no parking zones’, reserved parking spaces, red or yellow painted curbs or other restricted spaces.
  • You must have a permit to park on campus. Visitor permits are available from Parking Services.

Stevenson Residents Only

  • Stevenson suites only: Move MicroFridges into the two bedrooms
  • Stevenson singles, doubles, and suites only: Arrange the furniture in your room to the original room layout.
    See images of original room layouts or speak with your CA if you are unsure about the layout of your furniture.
  • (Stevenson only) Return loft kits to the basement elevator lobby of your tower.
  • (Stevenson only) Return Internet/Ethernet Equipment to ResTech Helpdesk in Stevenson C to avoid being charged.

New Hall Residents Only

  • Microwaves in kitchenette area must be clean
  • Cupboards in kitchenette must be emptied and must be clean
  • Laundry room must be clean and empty of all clothes, check washers and dryers
  • All furniture must be present in the cluster area, and must be clean
  • Remote control for television must be present and in working condition
  • 3D glasses must be present and working
  • Telephone; all parts must be present, and working
  • Set thermostat at 74°F
  • Vacuum must be present and working

Final Steps

  • Show up for your appointment with your Community Advisor.
  • Close and lock windows
  • Close curtains/blinds
  • Turn off lights.
  • Close and lock your door when you leave.
  • If you have a backup key, return it to the front desk.
  • Sign your Room Condition Form and key envelope.
  • Keep the yellow copy of the form for your records.
