The curriculum is based on an academic model utilized by most colleges and universities in the United States. “Living, Learning and Leading” are the three competencies in which students should be proficient.
Each competency includes three specific topical elements. These elements should be viewed as “course content.” Like any curriculum, the courses and competencies overlap and are often inter-related. The “interdisciplinary” nature of the curriculum is what makes it strong, flexible, and vital.
Some of the goals this course content focuses on are: maintaining a safe & clean living environment; knowing services and resources in the various communities around NIU; balancing freedom with responsibility; enjoying life and having pride in the residence hall; being connected to NIU.
Some of the goals this course content focuses on are: allowing for positive interactions with other students on the floor and in the hall; developing independence and autonomy; networking within a support group of friends.
Some of the goals this course content focuses on are: making healthy living and behavior choices; developing confidence; knowing wellness resources and services that are available at all levels of our community.
Some of the goals this course content focuses on are: developing adaptable study, coping, critical thinking, problem-solving, and survival skills; understanding the purpose and relevance of general education; integrating general education and academic major; developing personal goals; developing competencies in verbal and written communication, decision-making, goal setting, time management, and teamwork; developing an awareness and use of academic resources.
Some of the goals this course content focuses on are: participating in and appreciating a variety of cultural events and discussions; extending learning to all aspects of live; examining attitudes and values such as political, religious, and gender issues.
Some of the goals this course content focuses on are: developing an appreciation of differences and the beauty of diversity; enhancing or establishing a respect for diversity that is celebrative, not just tolerant; becoming interpersonally sensitive and understanding.
Some of the goals this course content focuses on are: taking advantage of a variety of leadership opportunities; developing motivation, delegation, and communication skills; integrating leadership experiences into academics and career plans.
Some of the goals this course content focuses on are: contributing to the community through volunteering, fundraising, and community service; integrating service-learning into academic and leadership roles; developing an on-going connection to the community through involvement.
Some of the goals this course content focuses on are: thinking critically, discussing and analyzing moral and ethical issues; developing an awareness of the changes occurring in the world.
