Under-Assignment Policy

Following the assignment of all students housed in temporary assignments, spaces may become available in student rooms throughout the residence hall system. These rooms shall be referred to as under-assigned rooms.

A student(s) in a room that has become under assigned has the following options regarding his/her assignment:

A. Retain the room as is, but understand that a new roommate(s) could be assigned at any time

B. Guarantee the room as a temporary single (if room is a double) or a temporary double (if room is a triple) by paying the prorated single (or double) rate for the remainder of the academic year.

Students receive by letter of these two options with a deadline by which they need to respond with their decision. This mail is referred to as the Under Assignment Letter. Unless the resident notifies Housing & Dining in writing of his/her intent to select option B, that is, returns the signed Under Assigment Letter indicating that he/she wants to pay the additional cost to keep the room as a single for the remainder of that academic year, it will be assumed that a student has selected option A and understands that he/she is expected to keep the open side of their room clear at all times for occupancy by a new resident. Once a new person has been assigned to (before they move into the room) the open space, the current resident no longer has the option to change their assignment to a single room. When the resident chooses to buy out the open side of the room, the room remains designated, and charged, as a double-as-a-single or a triple-as-a-double for the remainder of the current academic year. The residents(s) does not have the option to change the room back to a double or a triple at a later date.

When a student selecting option A is subsequently assigned a new roommate, it is our expectation that the original resident will appropriately welcome the new resident.

If Residential Life staff members become aware that the original resident has behaved in a manner to force the new roommate out of the room, the original resident shall face disciplinary action.
