FAQ: Roommates

How do I find a roommate?

Finding a roommate is completely in your hands. Room pairing and matching is completely random unless you sign up for a room with a friend. We do not have a roommate matcher or finders for you to use, but search for the "NIU Class of..." Facebook groups to speak with other incoming students. Quite a few students have found people they would like to room with through these groups. If you have questions about the groups, contact Undergraduate Admissions.

You can also select a room in one of the Living-Learning Communities and be paired with someone from the same major or educational interest. Living-Learning Communities are set up based on several courses of study.

Outside of those two options, any student can go online and pick any room if they are eligible to live in that space.

I already have a roommate in mind. How do we sign up for a room together?

During room sign up, one person (the "designee") will select a room for all roommates. This person must have your Z-ID and your roommate PIN. You can find your roommate PIN by going to Housing Signup and clicking on Roommates. The designee will select a room and meal plans for all other roommates.

Can I choose my roommate even though I've already signed up for a room?

If you have already signed up for a room, you can no longer pull in a roommate to live in your room. However, if the person you want to be roommates with has not signed up for housing yet, they are eligible to live in your room, and there is a bed available in your room, they may sign up to live with you. If both of you have already signed up for separate rooms, you can both make a room change at a special time during room sign up. See the room sign up schedule.

How do I find out who my roommate is?

You can look up your roommates at any time by going to MyNIU > Campus Housing Sign Up > Roommates. Before move in day you will receive a letter from us with information about your roommate.

What if I don't like my roommate?

Living with a roommate is an important part of your college experience. Your Community Advisor is trained on assisting students with roommate issues that may arise. Learn more about roommates.

What happens if I sign up for housing without a roommate?

Vacant bed spaces in your room or suite may be booked by other students also going through the room sign up process.

If my roommate signs up for housing and pulls me into a room, do I still have to sign up for housing?

No. During room sign up, one person (the "designee") will select a room for all roommates. This person must have your Z-ID and your roommate PIN. You can find your roommate PIN by going to Housing Signup and clicking on Roommates. The designee will select a room and meal plans for all other roommates.
