During room sign up, one person (the "designee") will select a room for all roommates. The designee must have registration information for all roommates and will be responsible for selecting the desired room.
If you have already signed up for a room, you can no longer pull in a roommate to live in your room. However, if the person you want to be roommates with has not signed up for housing yet, they are eligible to live in your room, and there is a bed available in your room, they may sign up to live with you. If both of you have already signed up for separate rooms, you must both join the wait list. Requests for roommate matching need to have written confirmation from both students.
Before move in day you will receive a letter from us with information about your roommate.
Living with a roommate is an important part of your college experience. Your Community Advisor is trained on assisting students with roommate issues that may arise. Learn more about roommates.
Vacant bed spaces in your room or suite may be booked by other students also going through the room sign up process.

Students who are interested in signing up as a group of 6 or more to be residents in the same community will have specifically designated days during sign up to do so. Each member of the group must complete the Community-Based Room Sign Up Form (PDF). The group can choose blocks of available rooms and have a designated contact person complete the sign up process for the full group. This option is designed to support residents who want to move together to different floors or buildings or live with other students who have common interests or hobbies. The group contact person will select a room for you by proxy. All persons in the group will need to complete a proxy form, giving their contact person their NIU Z-ID number and personal lottery number from this letter. Do not give anyone your NIU Z-ID password.
