Recognition Ceremony for Graduating Honors Students

Our University Honors Program celebrates academic excellence at a special recognition ceremony at the end of each academic year. This event is held on NIU's Honors Day. Graduating Honors students are celebrated and publicly recognized for their hard work, dedication to excellence and academic achievements. We present awards to students and faculty. The president, provost, vice provost and associate vice provost for University Honors are normally in attendance.

At this event, graduating University Honors students receive University Honors regalia to wear at their college's commencement ceremony. Students are eligible for one of three levels of distinction.

Three Levels of Distinction

University Honors

The University Honors Program provides students of high academic promise and achievement the opportunity to participate actively in the plan and design of their own educational directions. The University Honors Program has two phases – “Lower Division Honors” and “Upper Division Honors.” Students who complete both phases of the program and have attained an overall grade point average of at least 3.20 will graduate “With University Honors.”

Upper Division

Students who complete only the second phase will be awarded the distinct “Upper Division Honors” in recognition of their completion of 12 semester of hours of upper-division University Honors course work and the attainment of a minimum overall grade point average of 3.20.

Lower Division

Students who complete only the first phase will be awarded the distinction of “Lower Division Honors” in recognition of their completion of 15 semester hours of University Honors course work and the attainment of a minimum overall grade point average of 3.00.

The University Honors Program sends both an email and postmarked invitation to students. Family and friends are welcome to attend. There is no limit on seating. If you are unable to attend the Honors Day event, youmay pick up your University Honors regalia in the University Honors Program’s office, Campus Life Building 110, from April 22 through May 10.

Note: December graduates of the University Honors Program receive graduation regalia, which is available for pick up at the end of the fall semester.
