Certificate FAQ's

What is a certificate?

Certificates consist of a concentrated set of thematically-related courses. Completion of a certificate recognizes professional development and expertise or provides a specialization within a broader degree program.

How long will it take to complete a Homeland Security certificate?

Students taking two courses each semester can complete these certificates in less than two years.

How many credits are in each track?

There are 18-21 credits in each track. Please see individual track links for specific information. 

What jobs or responsibilities will I be qualified for once I complete the certificate?

Broadly speaking, you will be trained to advise your employers and aid in crisis management at your workplace. For more specific information see the individual track descriptions or call your program advisor.

How do I apply for admission to a certificate?

You need to apply to NIU as an undergraduate studentStudent at Large, or Graduate Student. Once admitted to NIU, contact the coordinator of the certificate that interests you. Meet with the coordinator and plan your course schedule.

How much do courses cost?

Tuition and fees for a three-hour course will be approximately $850.00 for undergraduate students and $1200 for graduate students (for fall 2006 and spring 2007).  For detailed information on current rates, visit www.niu.edu/bursar.  See “student account information.”

Where will courses be located?

Courses are taught at the NIU campus in DeKalb as well as the NIU Outreach centers in Naperville, Hoffman Estates, and Rockford. Certain courses will be offered online.

Can I earn a bachelor's degree in homeland security?

NIU offers three bachelor degree's that can include the courses toward a homeland security certificate.

What certificate is right for me?

The best person to answer that question is your track coordinator. Contact the coordinator associated with the certificate track or tracks that interest you to decide on the right path to take.

Can I modify my certificate track to involve my interests?

Yes. Independent study options are available in the tracks. You can study homeland security related subjects suited to your specific interests. You may also talk to your track coordinator about your track and how to modify it to suit your professional or educational needs.

What happens if a class isn't offered when I need it or I have used the class to fulfill another requirement?

Students are allowed to make substitutions when necessary.  You should contact your track coordinator and discuss substituting classes to fit your needs.  With approval from a track coordinator, you may have many options.
