Statement from Doris Macdonald, Steering Committee Chair
I am honored and delighted to have been given the opportunity head up the steering committee for the Higher Learning Commission’s accreditation self-study. Accreditation by the HLC is essential in externally validating how we accomplish our mission; in addition, the process of self-study is a valuable component in our understanding of what we do, and want we can do, as an institution. Over the next two years, I’ll be working with a dedicated steering committee of faculty from across campus who have already begun working on this intensive task. Their talented working committees comprise members from throughout the NIU community who have already begun gathering descriptive and evaluative data on all aspects of Northern’s operations. In collaboration with these committees and with an excellent staff in the Provost’s Office, we will create a 2014 self-study report that fully examines, evaluates, and exemplifies all aspects of NIU. I look forward to working with the entire Northern community in creating for the HLC and its site visiting team a report that illustrates NIU’s strengths, challenges, and opportunities as it engages with local, regional, national, and global communities.
