Atlantic World Discussion Group

We are a faculty-graduate student discussion group from Northern Illinois University interested in the history of the Atlantic World. The group meets weekly to discuss article-length pieces that focus either on some aspect of the Atlantic World in the era from the Columbian encounter until independence and abolition/emancipation from the late 18th to mid-19th centuries. We also discuss our own published research or works in progress, including that of graduate students in the group, and occasionally we watch and discuss movies that have Atlantic World themes or content.

The group meets off campus, usually in a restaurant nearby on Lincoln Highway, and anyone interested is welcome to come. This forum helps graduate students to prepare for exams and research, and undergraduates may participate as well. It is also providing a format to discuss ideas important to faculty and student research. For this semester’s schedule, current readings, and past readings please see the columns below.
