Keynote Address

Douglas EdgertonKeynote address is “The ‘Black Iron Hand’: Midwestern Soldiers and the Crusade to Save America.”  Dr. Egerton will present findings from his latest research on black soldiers in the Union Army during the American Civil War.  

Professor Douglas Egerton is a Professor of History at Le Moyne College. He specializes in Early American and 19th Century American history, and has research interests in slave rebelliousness and the intersections between race and politics. He is the author of several acclaimed books, including Death or Liberty: African Americans and Revolutionary America (2009), Year of Meteors: Stephen Douglas, Abraham Lincoln, and the Election That Brought on the Civil War (2010), and The Wars of Reconstruction: The Brief, Violent History of America’s Most Progressive Era (2014). His latest book, Thunder At the Gates: The Black Civil War Regiments That Redeemed America (2016), is the co-winner of the 2017 Gilder Lehrman Lincoln Prize from the Gilder Lehrman Institute and Gettysburg College.
