Helping Someone in Need

A person who is suicidal may present warning signs. The more signs they show, the more likely they are to be suicidal.

It’s important to know the warning signs and take action if you notice them. Being aware and involved can save lives.

  • If you suspect someone you know is considering suicide, speak up. Tell them you’ll help them get the support they need.
  • If you or someone you know is in imminent dangercall 911.

Types of Warning Signs

Verbal

  • Direct
    • “I’m going to kill myself”
    • “I wish I were dead”
    • “If (such and such) does not happen I’ll kill myself”
  • Indirect
    • “My family/friends would be better off without me”
    • “Nobody would care if I died”
    • “Pretty soon you won’t have to worry about me”

Behavioral

  • Depression
  • Substance use or dependence
  • Non-suicidal self-injury
  • Previous suicide attempts
  • Feelings of hopelessness and loneliness, isolation
  • Feelings of being a burden to others
  • Ineffective coping strategies
  • Acquiring means
  • Risky behavior (impulsive)

Situational

  • School or work problems
  • Financial difficulties
  • Interpersonal difficulties or losses
