Health Services will be offering influenza vaccine to eligible students each fall, while supplies last. Influenza virus is spread by coughing, sneezing, or nasal secretions. Receiving influenza vaccine can significantly reduce the chance of becoming seriously ill with influenza. It takes up to two (2) weeks for protection after vaccination.
Why should students get a Flu Shot? It is important to get influenza vaccine each year if you want to reduce your risk of illness. Influenza vaccine is recommended for people who can spread illness to others at risk (e.g., household contacts, caregivers, medical personnel in contact with others at risk), people who provide essential community services, people who live in dormitories or other crowded conditions, and persons who want to reduce the likelihood of becoming ill or spreading influenza to others.
Vaccine is not recommended for persons who are severely allergic to eggs or who have had an adverse reaction to influenza vaccine.
Flu shots are available right now (October 2016) and on a walk in basis to any NIU student.
What is the cost? Students with Student Health Insurance have the cost of the flu shot covered 100% by their insurance.
Those without Student Health Insurance are welcome to come to Student Health Services for their flu shot. These students will be charged $32 and can pay via cash, check, credit/debit card, or Bursar. These students may wish to file a claim with their insurance company to potentially get reimbursed for the flu shot.
