V.A.S. Commitment and Goals

Commitment

  • Enhance victim/survivor-centered services and awareness within the NIU community regarding sexual assault, dating/domestic violence, and stalking.
  • Present educational programs and presentations to any student, student organization, residence hall floor, office/department, athletic team, Greek organization, or academic class to increase knowledge of sexual assault, dating/domestic violence, and stalking.
  • Provide advocacy and support services to all NIU students who have been impacted by sexual assault, dating/domestic violence, and stalking. All support and advocacy services are free and confidential.

Goals

  • Awareness
    • Through the support of local, state, and national awareness month activities, Victim Advocacy Services will provide members of the NIU community with more awareness on the issues of sexual assault, dating/domestic violence, and stalking, thus enhancing campus awareness that will assist in creating an open culture and community willing to take a stand against these crimes.
  • Education
    • The collegiate experience is comprised of learning inside and outside the classroom. Through educational and informative programs and presentations, NIU students will learn how to be proactive in addressing sexual assault, dating/domestic violence, and stalking within their community.
  • Advocacy and Support
    • Through confidential, free, and individualized attention, Victim Advocacy Services will provide each student with services that are coordinated to best fit their needs. Victim Advocacy Services provides collaborative opportunities with many on- and off-campus agencies and departments to provide support and assistance to help students navigate through the reporting process, if they choose this route. At Northern Illinois University, Victim Advocacy Services is the primary contact for those students looking for advocacy and support for sexual assault, dating/domestic violence, and stalking.
