Wait! Stop throwing your batteries in the trash! NIU’s Task Force on the Sustainable Campus Climate (Green Team) will take them for you free of charge! Instead of throwing alkaline and rechargeable batteries in the garbage, the Green Team is proud to announce a new initiative to recycle these batteries. This is an opportunity for the campus community to be involved with a green program that promotes sustainability and environmental awareness by recycling batteries found in the office environment. The following types of batteries will be accepted: rechargeable batteries, AA, AAA, C, D, 9-volt and other small alkaline batteries found in typical office equipment and supplies. As depicted in the following picture, please seal the battery terminals with tape to prevent accidental discharge during shipment.

Once the battery terminals have been safely secured with tape, please insert the batteries into the reusable envelope provided and mail to Campus Mail Services. There is no limit to the number of batteries that can be placed in the envelope as long as the envelope can be sealed and secured during shipment. If you need additional envelopes, please call Campus Mail Services at 753-1183.

In addition, approximately 30 cell phones were delivered to the DeKalb Lions club for refurbishing for re-use; CFL lamps were recycled through the EH & S program; rechargeable and alkaline batteries were recycled; as were approximately 15 lbs of used CDs & DVDs.
