The Task Force on the Sustainable Campus Environment, also known as the Green Team, was formed to help Northern Illinois University evolve into a more sustainable campus. The President's Office called for the task force to be created out of the rising importance of sustainability initiatives in higher education. A team of faculty, staff, and select students was comprised from different departments throughout campus. This diverse group of individuals creates an integrative approach to tackling sustainability on campus.
Members of the Task Force have contributed to sustainability improvements such as energy efficiency improvements, water conservation, recycling expansion, and making NIU a leader in sustainable transportation. These initiatives will not only reduce Northern Illinois University's carbon footprint, but will also save the University money and reduce resource consumption and waste. Successful projects include electronic waste collection, battery collection and recycling, and recycling pens, pencils, and markers. Some of the projects initiated by the Green Team have been expanded by different departments such as the Campus Recycling Program, Environmental Health and Safety, and the Institute for the Environment, Sustainability, and Energy.
