Ryan Cumpston
I never imagined that I’d spend the summer at the North Pole.
I had never even been out of the country. It was such an honor that my professor, Ross Powell, picked me for his research expedition. I was working with scientists from all over the world, and working one-on-one with Dr. Powell on global warming research that has the potential to change the way we take care of our planet.
Going on this trip was a defining experience. It showed me what it really takes to be a professional researcher. And it showed me what I want to do with my life.
I learned that I have the ability to help people, to change their lives. This trip, and the guidance of my professors, have helped me make the right connections and figure out where to go next.
Not many undergraduate students get the chance to have a hands-on experience in their area of study, or to work so closely with experienced professors.
I wish more NIU students had a chance to do something like this.
I feel incredibly lucky to be a part of what’s going on here.
