Course Description

The purpose of this course is to help you make the most of your major in geography or meteorology. Our goal is that you will successfully complete your degree, enjoy your time here at NIU, take advantage of the opportunities NIU and the department have to offer, perform your best in course work, and transition successfully to the future. The main goal of the course is to help you develop goals for your degree program and a semester-by-semester degree completion plan.

Course Objectives

  • To acquaint you with key people that will assist you through your degree program.
  • To introduce you to the resources and facilities in geography & meteorology.
  • To broaden your perspective on learning opportunities, especially outside the classroom.
  • To introduce you to NIU's career resources and the breadth of career opportunities building off the majors in geography and meteorology.
  • To familiarize you with valuable library resources in geography and meteorology and how to get help in accessing reference materials, data sources, and other library materials.
  • To review what you should expect to accomplish by completing the major in geography or meteorology and how achieving these Student Learning Outcomes relates to success in a career.

Course Format

GEOG 300, Proseminar meets once a week for 10 weeks. Over the first several weeks we will provide you with a general orientation to the department and review the majors in geography and meteorology. We will then spend two weeks on library resources, introducing you to resources for geography and meteorology and how to use the library for research and course-related activities. Over the last half of the course we will introduce you to other academic and career services on campus, introduce you to the types of careers your education prepares you for, and review opportunities for advanced education and continuing professional development.
