The Foreign Language Residence Program (FLRP) was inaugurated in 1972, and it is Northern Illinois University’s oldest academic residential program. FLRP is an engaged living and learning community that provides participants with a venue and opportunity to practice a foreign language in an immersion environment. On a daily basis (Monday through Thursday, 4:30 – 5:30), students hone their target language skills in a relatively stress-free environment with native speakers. These native speakers live with the participants in the FLRP language clusters in Stevenson C-Tower. Our aim is to prepare participants to live in a global, multilingual society. The FLRP environment also helps to equip students culturally and linguistically for study abroad experiences in a non-English speaking country. Furthermore, we are able to enhance learning and diversity by providing periodic, culturally rich excursions to the greater Chicago area making it Northern Illinois University's oldest residential program, the Foreign Language Residence Program (FLRP) has provided NIU students with an extraordinary opportunity to practice their language skills outside the classroom setting in a relaxed residential environment.

Due to increased demand, The Foreign Language Residence Program (FLRP) is now accepting participants for credit who do not live in Stevence C-Tower: the location of the Foreign Language Residence Program floor. Participants are now eligible for the one (1) credit hour of elective credit by fulfilling all the program requirements (daily dinners Monday through Thursday 4:30 to 5:30, Language Night Presentation at a time to be established during fall semester, Taft Retreat, special dinners, and excursions) even though you will not live in Stevenson C-Tower. All participants enrolled in the FLAL 410 course will be assessed a $50 programming fee. When submitting your application (which can be found at the bottom of this page), please indicate at the top of the application where you will live. You must show up during the first week of classes to the Sunset Room in Stevenson at 4:30! We will take your Z-ID number and register you for the one (1) credit hour FLRP course at that time. It will appear on your schedule as FLAL 410. Please note that you cannot enroll yourself in this class online! Registration is the first day of classes! Looking forward to hearing from you!
