MA Northern Illinois University, Spanish (expected 2012)
BA Knox College, Spanish, 2006
I am a graduate assistant and a graduate student in Spanish at NIU. I am currently pursuing my MA in Spanish with concurrent Illinois State Teacher Certification and an endorsement in ESL/Bilingual education. For as far back as I can remember, I have always had a fascination with language, especially Spanish. As an undergraduate, I majored in Spanish, with concentrations in Latin American Studies and Anthropology/Sociology. During my time at Knox College, I studied in Buenos Aires, Argentina and Barcelona, Spain. I also carried out ethnographic field research in México for an independent study that dealt with topics of Mayan identity, gendered spaces and tourism.
While most of my undergraduate research and experiences were focused on Latin American Culture and Literature, as a graduate student I have changed gears and turned my attention to the study of linguistics. My academic interests include Sociolinguistics, Second Language Acquisition, Foreign Language Education and Bilingual Education.
Outside of my life as a student and graduate assistant, I enjoy teaching and participating in group fitness classes. I teach several Zumba classes, where my participants are always guaranteed a lively, sweaty and Spanish/Portuguese-filled class. I also enjoy traveling and try to do so as much as I can in order to practice my Spanish, Portuguese, French and Hebrew.
