This makes it one of the top ten most commonly spoken languages, and as a result, one of the most influential languages in the world. Portuguese is also used by numerous immigrant communities in countries around the world, including the United States. With knowledge of Portuguese, students will have doors opened to employment opportunities including translation, interpretation, international business and marketing, international relations, diplomacy, publishing and teaching.
What makes Portuguese at NIU unique? Portuguese 103 and 104, both 5-credit classes, offer students the opportunity to complete their language requirement in just two semesters. Students will hear their instructor, who has lived in Portugal and researched the connections between Portugal and Africa, speak with the European accent. The textbook that is used, however, introduces students to both the Brazilian and European variants of Portuguese, allowing students to choose to produce the variant they prefer. Emphasis is given not to any one country or culture, but to the great richness and variety of cultures that are united by this language.
