Study Abroad Scholarships 2018

Deadline for all applications is February 23, 2018

Apply online for the following:

Joseph Suhadolc Memorial Scholarship Fund

  • Incoming freshmen, transfer students and/or continuing students
  • Preference given to students with a major in German or minor in Russian and/or German
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA overall and minimum 3.25 GPA in major/minor
  • Demonstrated motivation for language learning and academic record
  • Two letters of recommendation

Interpro Translation Solutions FLRP Study Abroad Fund

  • For Foreign Language Residence Program participants who are majors or minors in a language only
  • Students must have lived on the FLRP floor and be active participants in the program for at least a year
  • Sophomore status (that is, who have completed at least 30 hours)
  • Eligible students must have a 3.0 or better GPA overall, and a 3.25 GPA within their foreign language major or minor
  • Applicants must be full-time, degree-seeking students to be eligible
  • Students must maintain a full workload while abroad
  • What is needed: Statement of purpose, one letter of reference from a professor in the foreign language department, a statement from the FLRP coordinator

Michael Morris Memorial Scholarship

  • Open to any full-time, declared foreign language major seeking a degree or Certificate of Graduate Study in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures
  • In good academic standing with the university with a minimum GPA of 3.0.
  • Submit a study abroad proposal including objectives, activities, location and estimated travel expenditures
  • Preferred: Student in the educator licensure program who is enrolled in or has passed ILAS 301
  • Students must maintain a full class load while abroad
  • Two letters of recommendation

FLAL BLOG Study Abroad Scholarship

For students (majors and minors preferred) participating in departmental faculty-led programs to Argentina, China, France, Germany and Spain.


FLAL Study Abroad Scholarship for Minors in Chinese, Italian, Japanese and Russian

  • Undergraduate students with minors in Chinese, Italian, Japanese or Russian
  • Students must have completed at least one semester at NIU
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA overall
  • Preference given to students who have never studied abroad
  • Two letters of recommendation, at least one needs to be from a FLAL faculty member
