Hometown: Lemont, Illinois
Degree: Bachelor's degree in Vocal Performance
The faculty in NIU's School of Music have a fan in Amelia Harlovic of Lemont.
Harlovic transferred to NIU from the College of DuPage to earn her bachelor's degree in Vocal Performance and, specifically, to study with Associate Professor Orna Arania, among others.
"I heard Dr. Arania was a really good teacher. I heard about the vocal department and how good they were," Harlovic said. "I heard we had a really great music department here at NIU, so, of course, it was a number one choice for me."
Before NIU, Arania performed extensively as a soloist in her native country of Israel and toured the world. She sings with leading ensembles in Chicago, such as Bella Voce and Bella Voce Camerata. She's also both a singer and assistant conductor of The Lakeside Singers, who've performed at numerous venues throughout Chicago, including multiple times at the Ravinia Festival.
Harlovic said she took everything Arania taught to heart. "Try to retain as much as you can because your professors are only here to help," she'd advise future students. "Go to class and just know it'll be over soon, so just enjoy it while you're here. Enjoy the journey."
Now teaching private lessons at NIU's Community School of Arts, an outreach of the College of Visual and Performing Arts, Harlovic isn't sure what the future holds.
"I'm just going to audition as much as I can for professional choirs and apply for a music director position at local churches and just keep singing," she said.
