NIU Helps Huskies Get Hired

NIU Career Services helps craft the picture perfect job hunt

The NIU Career Services Department helps bring your job hunt into focus with great internship and career opportunities, resume writing assistance, and even a professional portrait for your LinkedIn profile.

Meet with Career Counselors

By making Career Services one of your first stops on campus, you have the opportunity to work with counselors to identify your talents and interests, and to research career paths that may be are a good fit for you.

From there, career counselors can help you explore internships and other options that allow you to gain valuable real-world experiences that make you more attractive to employers after graduation. Once you have those experiences under your belt, they can also show you how to highlight them in ways that get your resume to the top of the stack.

Complimentary LinkedIn Photo booth

The perfect LinkedIn photo is an invaluable item to the modern job hunter, according to Brandon Lagana, acting executive director of NIU Career Services. That is why his department partners with the Creative Services department to provide students attending job fairs a professional portrait.

“When students tell us that they are unhappy with their Linked In profile, more often than not it starts with the photo. Giving you a professional photo is just that one last item on a long list of things we do to ensure that you are poised and polished as you try to track down that first job.”

Huskies Get Hired

Huskies Get Hired, sometimes referred to as HGH, connects students who are seeking internships and jobs with employers who have open positions. Huskies Get Hired has additional functions that help students, employers and NIU faculty/staff.

Using this system, students are able to access a variety of helpful career resources, such as:

  • Search and apply for hundreds of internships and part-time and full-time jobs
  • Upload multiple resumes, cover letters and unofficial transcripts into a personal document repository
  • Publish resumes in a “resume book” so that employers can view your qualifications
  • Use the “Career Advice” feature to link to information from the National Association of Colleges & Employers about resumes, interviews, the job market, salaries and job search strategies

Career and Internship Fairs

NIU Career Services also provides opportunities for you to interact with representatives from a wide range of potential employers at Meet the Firm Nights and mock interviews so you will be ready for and succeed at an actual interview. They also hold several job fairs each year. The Fall 2016 Job Fair featured representatives from more than 200 employers – ranging from the AAA Chicago Motor Club to computer information-systems-company Zones, Inc.
