4,600 NIU students—more than $10 million in scholarships!
We know NIU students—and their parents—are cost-conscious.
That’s why we want to make sure students know about the many scholarship opportunities at NIU.
Students can earn scholarships for academic merit and service, as well as scholarships specific to their areas of study.
In fact, you might be surprised to learn just how many NIU students receive some type of award. During the 2015-16 academic year, nearly 4,600 NIU students collected more than $10 million in scholarships.
That’s worth repeating—$10 million in scholarships!
Here’s more good news: NIU expects to award millions of dollars in scholarship money during the coming school years, too. So you could be among the thousands of students who reap the benefits.
The first step is to search and apply for awards—and don’t wait until the last minute. You’ll also need to be aware of application deadlines for various scholarships. For example, the deadline for incoming-freshman merit scholarships is Dec. 1, with the exception of the Presidential Scholarship, which has a deadline of Nov 15. The deadline for transfer scholarships is Feb. 1.
Of course, filing an application doesn’t mean you’ll receive a scholarship. But you’ll never know unless you apply.
“Most of the scholarships are competitive and based on academic merit,” says Anne Hardy, director of NIU’s Scholarship Office. “So typically scholarship recipients are excellent students, but you don’t necessarily have to earn straight A’s. Other factors can be taken into account, such as SAT/ACT scores, community service and leadership roles.”
