Textiles, Apparel and Merchandising FAQs

Is this what I should major in if I want to be a buyer?

Yes.  However, there are many other career opportunities including department or store manager, visual merchandiser, advertising assistant, or fashion coordinator.  For more information, please check our full listing of career opportunities.

Is this the right major for me if I want to be a designer?

No.  Although we do offer some topics related to design, we do not offer the apparel/fashion design curriculum.

Will this degree only enable me to work in a retail store?

No.  Our graduates have a wide variety of career opportunities related to fashion.  Some of our graduates have worked in apparel design and manufacturing industries, as well as the textile industry.

Should I pursue a minor in business?

Yes.  Completion of a business or marketing minor would strengthen your background and understanding of fashion retail industries.  Several courses required in the TAM major also meet the requirements for a business or marketing minor.
