Model Syllabus - Things to Consider

IDEA Process
  • Investigate
  • Design/Develop
  • Execute
  • Appraise

Here are some ideas to get you started in the process of designing an instructionally sound syllabus

Investigate
What are the:

Investigate

  • Students' needs for professional and individual growth in your course?
  • Pre-requisites for your course?
  • Links (interfaces) of knowledge your course provides for other courses or programs?
  • Activities can you incorporate into the course that make for active learning?
Notes:

 Design/
Develop
Steps to take:

Design/Develop

  1. Define students' responsibilities
  2. Define instructor's role & responsibility to students
  3. Provide clearly stated goals & student outcomes
  4. Establish standards & procedures for evaluation
  5. Acquaint students with course logistics
    1. Out of class experiences
    2. Group Work
  1. Establish pattern of communication between instructor & students
  2. Consider students with special needs (What arrangements or resources do you have in place?)
Notes:

 Execute
Activity for
first day
of class

Execute

(Before distributing the course syllabus)
  1. Ask students to take 2 minutes to write down their expectations in this course (what they hope to learn for their profession or personal growth)
  2. Distribute syllabus
  3. Divide students to form small groups (3 to 5)
  4. Each group selects someone who will report their discussion items
  5. Ask group to review the syllabus and make a list of:
    1. questions and/or concerns
    2. what they like and dislike in the syllabus
  1. Address the issues raised
    1. Give your reasoning
    2. State benefits for doing it (issue)
    3. Seriously consider changes that better meets students' needs
Notes:

 Appraise
Assess
student feedback

Appraise

  • Note the types of comments made by students
    1. Were they resolved with explanation
    2. Does it require restructuring course outline?
  • Assess the timeline
    1. Did you have realistic expectations on the quantity of work to be completed?
    2. Did you make minute adjustments during any week? (Record the change)
    3. Would this timeline be different if students were more advanced in skill sets?
