Design Tool Series for Online Instruction: Audio
Wednesday, August 1, 2012 from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm

Faculty new to online/blended instruction can benefit from exploring a host of approaches that may work better for enhancing instruction and communication with their online students. This session is an introduction to the varied uses of audio in online/blended instruction.   Participants will be exposed to examples of best practices and will review a number of considerations in working with audio content such as determining hardware/software requirements, encoded file formats, and posting content. Through a series of guided exercises, participants will learn about free/low cost tools that can facilitate working with audio. Advance registration is required.

Clickers in the Classroom
Monday, August 6, 2012 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm

This workshop is designed to explore the instructional possibilities of the student response systems (clickers) and their integration with Blackboard. The student response system is an educational technology that faculty can use in conjunction with Blackboard to create an interactive learning experience for students. Clickers can be used to increase student engagement, facilitate collaboration and dialogue, provide instant feedback to questions and improve class attendance. Student assessment results as well as attendance can also be uploaded to Blackboard. Advance registration is required.

Blackboard I: Introduction to Blackboard
Monday, August 13, 2012 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm

Learn the basics of creating and developing a course in Blackboard, NIU's Web Course Management System. Participants will get an overview of Blackboard's layout and navigation. In addition, participants will add materials to a sample Blackboard course, use classroom collaboration tools, and request their own Blackboard courses. Prerequisites: knowledge of Web browsing and basic computing skills. Advance registration is required.

Fall 2012 Teaching Effectiveness Institute:
Fundamentals Principles of Effective Instruction
Wednesday, August 15, 2012 from 8:00 am to 4:15 pm

This institute, for NIU faculty, instructors and teaching SPS & Civil Service staff only, is designed to introduce faculty to the basic principles of teaching, share information about teaching-related support resources available at NIU, and discuss how faculty can address students’ learning needs. This institute will include interactive presentations by NIU faculty and staff and participants will have opportunities to network with both new and experienced faculty at NIU. This institute is geared toward those who are new to teaching as well as those wanting to refresh their knowledge about teaching fundamentals. Advance registration is required and deadline is Friday, July 27, 2012.

Fall 2012 Teaching Effectiveness Institute:
Tools of Engagement: Connecting Meaningful Moments through Technologies

Thursday, August 16, 2012 from 8:00 am to 4:15 pm

During this institute for NIU faculty, instructors and teaching SPS & Civil Service staff only, participants will explore tools and processes for engaging more meaningfully with students in face-to-face, blended, and online courses. Against a backdrop of research findings and best practice literature, an emphasis will be placed on practical approaches to use in one's instructional context. Participants will experience firsthand a variety of technology-mediated engagement strategies during the institute and are encouraged to bring and use their own personal networked electronic devices (e.g., computers, smartphones, etc.). Participating faculty should come prepared to discuss existing course assignments that work well and less well. Engaged participants will leave with actionable plans for their classes along with numerous takeaway resources for after-the-institute follow-up. Advance registration is required and deadline is Friday, July 27, 2012.

Fall 2012 Teaching Assistant Orientation
Tuesday, August 21, 2012 from 8:00 am to 3:30 pm

**For Your TAs** At this orientation, graduate teaching assistants will learn the basic principles of teaching and related responsibilities, gather information about campus support resources, and network with other GAs, faculty, and resource staff. The day's sessions are presented by NIU faculty, staff, and administrators who are knowledgeable and experienced in the topics. While it is designed for new graduate assistants, continuing graduate assistants will also benefit from the orientation. Faculty are encouraged to share information about the TA Orientation with any graduate teaching assistants they work with. **NEW** Promoting Online Collaboration with Blackboard Collaborate
Monday, August 27, 2012 from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm

Many faculty consider live, personal interaction to be the most valuable element of quality teaching and learning experiences. Blackboard Collaborate is an online collaboration tool that integrates seamlessly with Blackboard allowing faculty and students to engage in meaningful and memorable interactions by combining interactive technologies with instructional best practices. Blackboard Collaborate will replace Wimba Classroom and will be available for Fall 2012. During this hands-on workshop, participants will receive an overview of the features of Blackboard Collaborate and step-by-step assistance with creating and managing Blackboard Collaborate sessions within Blackboard. Advance registration is required.

Blackboard II: Building Your Blackboard Course
Tuesday, August 28, 2012 from 10:00 am to 11:30 am

This hands-on workshop is a follow-up to the Blackboard I: Introduction to Blackboard workshop. We will cover the specifics of building a course in Blackboard, including personalizing course navigation, setting up a materials-delivery structure, and creating discussion areas. Participants will work in their own Blackboard courses and should bring to the session any course materials they want to upload or work with during the workshop. Files need to be on a flash drive (readable in a USB port) or on a CD. Prerequisites: basic computer skills and attendance at the Blackboard I: Introduction to Blackboard workshop or previous experience using Blackboard. Advance registration is required.

Team-Based Learning
Thursday, August 30, 2012 from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm

Team-based learning, when properly implemented, can help improve students' class preparation, attendance, and academic performance. During this workshop we will look at the characteristics of team-based learning, explore strategies to implement team-based learning in the classroom, discuss how to form energetic teams, and identify roles you and your students assume during team-based learning that can have a positive effect on both teaching and learning. Advance registration required.
