Overview

As more people (especially students) own and embrace mobile technologies, opportunities for teaching and learning expand. Most of us take these small, personal computers with us everywhere we go, and they’ve become an important tool in our lives.

As of Fall 2016, 97.5% of students surveyed by ECAR at NIU owned a smartphone. 85% used their smartphone for at least one course, and 80% said their smartphone was at least moderately important for their academic success.

Designing a course with mobile in mind allows for “Anytime, Anywhere Learning”, meeting students where they are. Whether it’s being notified when new course materials are available, watching a lesson on the bus, synthesizing materials from across the course to complete a quiz while at the park, or capturing thoughts and experiences in a short video from their internship location for a course assignment, there are numerous opportunities for students to connect with their learning via mobile.

In this morning session of the Teaching with Technology Institute, we will look at best practices for good mobile design, explore mobile course development, create rich content using mobile workflows, and highlight a number of mobile apps to make your life easier as an educator.

The tentative schedule for the institute is as follows:
