Why We Teach: Our Impact as Educators

Thursday, January 7, 2016
8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Fully Online

Workshop by NIU Faculty and Staff

Overview

Why We Teach

Thinking beyond course content and learning objectives, consider the following questions: Why do you teach? How do you want students to develop? What do you want your teaching legacy to be?

Answering these questions may help you develop your own teaching philosophy. Your teaching philosophy can inform your teaching practice and have a profound impact on your students’ development and progress throughout their lives. In difficult times such as we face in higher education today, reflecting on your teaching philosophy can help remind you of why you teach and how your role as a teacher is so important.

During this institute, fellow faculty members will share their philosophies of teaching, which may inspire you to refine or develop your own. Through guided discussion and reflection, you will begin to answer the question, “Why do I teach?” This institute should inspire, motivate, and energize you for the coming and future semesters.

This institute will take place completely online! You can participate from the comfort and convenience of your own home, office, or other location. All that is needed to participate is a computer and an Internet connection. Complete details for participating online will be provided to registered participants three days before the institute. The tentative schedule for the institute is as follows:
