Portfolios for Student Career Success

Thursday, January 8, 2015
1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Fully Online

Workshop by Faculty Development and Instructional Design Staff

Overview

Portfolio

What’s all the HIPe about? ePortfolios! NIU’s Progressive Learning and Undergraduate Studies (PLUS) recognizes the importance of High Impact Practices (HIP), and specifically draws attention to the value of portfolios. Portfolios are authentic reflections of a student’s body of work, and one of the several recommendations from the PLUS fall 2014 report to the provost. Portfolios are often senior year, capstone projects which represent a culmination of students’ best work. However, there is tremendous value in students maintaining a portfolio early in their college career.

During this afternoon institute, NIU faculty and teaching staff will be introduced to some interesting approaches to developing high quality assignments for portfolios, ways to connect students to their learning through reflection, and basic design principles in portfolio construction. Regardless of the technology or tool, Student Career Success will depend on artifacts showcasing the breadth and depth of knowledge, skills, and efficacy.

Faculty Development staff will lead the sessions and facilitate conversations to provide an opportunity for participants to network and share ideas before, during, and after the institute.

This institute will take place completely online! You can participate from the comfort and convenience of your own home, office, or other location. All that is needed to participate is a computer and an Internet connection.

Complete details for participating online will be provided to registered participants, one week before the institute. Advance registration is required and a computer with Internet access is needed in order to participate during the live sessions. The tentative schedule for the institute is as follows:
