The Center for Affirmative Action and Diversity Resources (AADR) is pleased to announce a series of interactive workshops for Faculty, Supportive Professional (SPS), and Civil Service (CS) staff members who currently or expect to serve in leadership roles such as Chairs, Directors, Managers and/or Supervisors. During each session, education, practical information, and professional resources regarding policies and procedures that foster and encourage fair, equitable and ethical treatment in the workplace will be provided. The intended goal of this program is to provide participants with an opportunity to learn how to implement the policies and procedures that are designed to address, resolve and prevent unfair and unethical treatment in the workplace. Helping our campus leaders identify and understand affirmative action and employment laws, policies and procedures and how to navigate through the various resources dedicated to the area of compliance in the workplace, is also an intended outcome. While the various sessions are open to all NIU employees, individuals in leadership roles who have the responsibility and authority to implement university policies and procedures will benefit most from this program and are especially encouraged to participate.
Technology is rapidly changing the way we conduct business, and social media has become the dominant form of communication globally. Over one billion users communicate through social media sites such as Face book, Twitter, and Google every day.
The purpose of this session is to provide an overview of current issues regarding the use of social media in the workplace and its effects, such as privacy concerns and/or poor employee performance, resulting in the possible need for corrective action. A review of NIU's policy on appropriate use of social media in the workplace, and acceptable and unacceptable use of NIU information technology resources will also be examined.

In some instances, NIU employees and students require assistance with determining the appropriate department that can best address issues related to discrimination, harassment, and/or unfair treatment in the workplace. Additionally, the issue of confidentiality is often a concern for an employee and/or student when he/she is seeking to disclose information and/or to obtain guidance.
The purpose of this panel discussion is to provide the participant with information regarding the various NIU campus resources and services that are available to provide support, guidance and resources on the effects of discrimination, harassment and/or unfair treatment. The conditions under which services are confidential and non-confidential will also be discussed.
The panel will consist of representatives from The Center for Affirmative Action & Diversity Resources (AADR), Office of the Ombudsperson, The Disability Resource Center (DRC), The Office of Community Standards & Student Conduct, Victims Advocacy Services, The Employee Assistance Program, Diversity & Equity, ADA, and Counseling & Student Development Center.

According to the Workplace Bullying Institute (WBI), 33% of Americans reported being bullied in the workplace in 2010. Workplace bullying is becoming increasingly common and has a negative impact on individuals and the organization.
The purpose of this session is to provide information, resources, and best practices for recognizing, stopping, and preventing bullying in the workplace. The definition of workplace and cyberbullying and the effects of bullying on individuals and the organization will be discussed. Any overview of current laws regarding workplace bullying will also be presented.

Sexual harassment is defined as any unwelcome sexual advance or request for a sexual favor or conduct of a sexual nature when such is made explicitly or implicitly a term or condition of employment and/or has the purpose or effect of substantially interfering with an individual’s work performance or creates an intimidating, hostile, or offensive working environment.
The purpose of this session is to assist with the continuing university effort to facilitate and create a respectful educational environment through sexual harassment awareness and prevention training. By engaging in a series of thoughtful discussions and exercises, this workshop will explore the State and Federal laws, and NIU policy regarding sexual harassment, identify the types of sexual harassment, and provide precautionary measures on how to avoid misunderstandings and accusations of sexual harassment in the workplace.

Any employee or student who experiences and/or witnesses possible acts of discrimination, harassment, or retaliation has the right and responsibility to report this activity to the applicable university administrator or AADR immediately. Any employee and/or student may also file an affirmative action complaint with AADR.
The purpose of this session is to provide information regarding the Affirmative Action complaint process. This session will include information related to the Affirmative Action complaint process, including but not limited to, how to file a complaint, the investigation process, alternatives to filing a complaint and possible outcomes and/or resolutions involved with the Affirmative Action complaint investigation process.

Over 500 Faculty, SPS, and Civil Service searches were conducted at NIU last year. This workshop will cover the Affirmative Action guidelines and best practices for recruiting, interviewing, and hiring Faculty, Supportive Professional Staff (SPS), and Civil Service employees.
The purpose of this session is to provide educational tools, resources, and best practices on how to recruit diverse faculty and staff, the Affirmative Action Hiring Process, and Equal Employment Opportunity. Faculty Development will also provide tips and resources for using Blackboard in the recruiting process.
The session is open to all NIU employees, however, it will be most beneficial for employees who are responsible for completing the hiring paperwork, participate on search committees, serve as the Chair for search committees, or as the hiring official for the search process.
