Creating significant learning experiences for students is perhaps the most beneficial way for faculty to improve teaching and learning for themselves and their students. Significant learning occurs when powerful, meaningful learning experiences transform the classroom into an exciting laboratory of learning. Integrated course design enables participants from all areas of higher education to create courses that are based on significant learning experiences in and out of the classroom. Integrated course design utilizes meaningful learning goals, active teaching and learning techniques, and quality assessment.

In this workshop, participants will learn the foundational knowledge necessary to design quality courses using the integrated course design model. They also will learn to use the model through application exercises and problems. By focusing on meaningful learner goals, teaching and learning activities, and assessment of learning, participants will develop a template they can use to design their own courses that integrates these three areas.

About Stewart Ross

Stewart Ross

Dr. Stewart Ross is the founding Director of the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning at Minnesota State University, Mankato (MSU). He has held this position for nine years. Previously he was Director of Bands at MSU for 21 years and has been in Higher Education for 36 years. He holds a Ph.D. in Music Education from Northwestern University.

In the past few years he has presented well over 50 workshops at universities throughout the country and internationally as well. Besides the workshop on Integrated Course Design he presents sessions on active learning, rubric creation, classroom assessment techniques, and diversity in the classroom. Dr. Ross is currently a Kiwanis International Trustee and is a trombonist in the Minnesota Valley Brass Quintet. He is the senior member of Dee Fink & Associates, delivering workshops throughout the world for faculty wanting to improve teaching and learning.

Registration Information

This workshop is open to NIU faculty, instructors, and teaching staff (SPS and civil service) only. Registered participants will receive workshop materials, lunch and refreshments, and a certificate of participation. Advanced registration is required. Please register early. Register online using the form below and provide your name, title, department, phone, NIU email address, and special accommodations if needed. Please contact the Center if you do not receive a response or an email confirmation of your registration within two working days.

Due to the expensive nature of the program and the advance notice needed for arranging food and materials, please register by the deadline and plan to attend the entire workshop. After you register, if you are unable to attend, please inform the Center by Monday, January 10, 2011 so that those on the waiting list can be given the opportunity to attend or program costs can be reduced.
