Department Chair Development Workshop

This is the eighth in the continuing series of department chair development workshops sponsored by the Office of the Provost and organized by the Department Chair Development Workshop Planning group. The purpose of this workshop is to analyze a number of scenarios related to department chairs' responsibilities and discuss strategies for addressing them effectively. The scenarios will include faculty-chair interactions, intervening in problems, maintaining confidentiality, dealing with conflicts, etc. The scenarios were developed by chairs. Workshop participants will first analyze the scenarios in small groups and then share their ideas in a large group with experts from Human Resources, Legal Services and Law.

Workshop Outline:

At the beginning of the workshop, participants will have an opportunity for a brief conversation with the Provost on topics of general interest. Listed below is the tentative agenda for the workshop.

8:30 to 9:00 am
Welcome and Overview by Provost Alden
Provost's Q&A with chairs on topics of general interest
9:00 to 10:15 am
Small group discussions of scenarios
10:15 to 10:30 am
10:30 to 11:45 am
Large group discussion with panel members Karen Baker (Human Resources, Ken Davidson (Legal Services), and Deborah Haliczer (Employee Relations). Moderated by LeRoy Pernell (Law)
11:45 to 12:00 pm
Closing Remarks by Provost Alden and Workshop Evaluation

Registration Information:

Registration deadline: March 19, 2007. Workshop registrants will receive the scenarios a week before the workshop to prepare for small group discussions. Due to the sensitive nature of the workshop topic, chairs who cannot attend the workshop are requested not to send alternates.
