Integrated Course Design to
Improve Student Learning

Workshop presented by
Faculty Development Staff

Tuesday, June 22, 2010
8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Capitol Room, Holmes Student Center

Overview:

Some courses have a profound impact on students’ learning. These courses are well-designed, address course-related challenges, and integrate course components to effectively meet course goals and objectives. Can all courses be designed this way? Are there general principles that can help us design courses for effective student learning? If you are wondering about these questions, then this workshop is for you.

This hands-on workshop is based on Dee Fink’s model of course design (Creating Significant Learning Experiences: An Integrated Approach to Designing College Courses, John Wiley & Sons, 2003), and describes a logical approach that leads to integrated and meaningful courses that increase student learning. This workshop will cover various stages of course design, including identifying situational factors that affect the course, developing course objectives, matching objectives with content and assessment activities, selecting engaging instructional delivery strategies, and ensuring the course design leads to meaningful learning among students.

The workshop will be presented by Faculty Development and Instructional Design Center staff who have participated in Dee Fink’s program on course design and have permission from Dee Fink to use his model and resources. Faculty, instructors, and teaching staff will benefit from the strategies presented in this workshop wether they are (re)designing a few class sessions, a whole course, or an entire curriculum. Participants must bring a syllabus or details for the course they wish to (re)design.
