Overview:

Teaching with Technology Institute 2011

On May 30, 2011, Blackboard Next Generation (NG) will make its campus-wide debut at NIU. This will be the most significant upgrade of Blackboard since it was first introduced at NIU almost ten years ago. Blackboard has been redesigned to offer an updated, user-centered interface coupled with a large selection of new tools and features. The result is a simpler process for creating and editing courses and new ways to facilitate classroom collaboration.

This institute will provide participants with a hands-on, in-depth overview of Blackboard NG's interface and features. The day will consist of four sequential sessions, and two technology showcases. At the end of the day, participants will have utilized a variety of new features to develop a sample Blackboard course in the new NG environment. All faculty and staff with prior Blackboard experience are welcome to attend the institute.  Due to the progression of the sessions, participants will be required to register for and attend the entire institute.

This year's institute will also include a technology showcase featuring Blackboard Mobile Learn. Blackboard Mobile Learn takes interactive teaching and learning to the mobile device, giving students and faculty instant access to their courses, content, and communities anywhere anytime. During the morning and afternoon breaks, institute participants will have an opportunity to explore Blackboard Mobile Learn on a variety of mobile devices. Staff will be on hand to assist participants with setting up their own mobile devices to run the Blackboard Mobile Learn application.

Advanced registration is required and seating is limited. The tentative schedule for the institute is as follows:

Schedule:

8:00 am - 8:30 am: Check-in

8:30 am - 12:00 pm: Morning Sessions

Building Your Course in Blackboard NG
In this session, participants will receive a guided tour through Blackboard NG's new interface and will explore the navigational and structural features inherent to this new version of Blackboard. Using Blackboard training accounts, participants will have the opportunity to explore the interface and begin constructing a sample Blackboard course. This will include customizing the Course Menu and Home Page as well as importing a variety of content and files into this sample course. We will also cover the redesigned Control Panel and demonstrate its use in terms of content organization, course customization, and course Tools.

Break and Technology Showcase

Communicating and Collaborating with Students in Blackboard NG
In this session, participants will get an overview of the new collaboration tools in Blackboard NG, including blogs, wikis and journals. We will also cover new ways to communicate with students via email, announcements and other synchronous and asynchronous Blackboard collaboration tools. Additionally, participants will learn about the Blackboard notification system.

Lunch in Blackhawk Cafeteria

1:00 pm - 4:30 pm: Afternoon Sessions

Facilitating Group Work in Blackboard NG
Using Blackboard NG's redesigned Group tools, faculty can more effectively implement and monitor group work in the classroom, avoiding the pitfalls that sometimes accompany group work. Break and Technology Showcase

Assessing Students in Blackboard NG
Blackboard NG has a number of enhanced assessment features: multiple assignment submissions, Group assignments, additional options in the Grade Center as well the new test and survey options. In this session, we will provide an overview of those features as well as walk participants through the steps of providing feedback to students and grading assignments submitted using the enhanced Assignment tool in Blackboard.
