Ever wondered what Wikis, Blogs, Podcasting, Social Bookmarking, Streaming, Gaming, Clickers and various other technologies are all about and how they can be used in teaching and learning? In this institute, these technologies and techniques for integrating them within the learning framework will be presented. This is not a hands-on program, but all faculty, staff, and teaching assistants interested in learning more about these emerging technologies and integrating them in their teaching will find this institute beneficial. No prior experience with these technologies is necessary for attending this institute and participants can select particular sessions to attend. The tentative schedule for the institute is as follows:
8:30 am to 9:00 am: Check-in and Refreshments
9:00 am to 10:30am: Social Networking Technologies (Wikis, Blogs, Social Bookmarking)
This session will explore the use of wikis, blogs, and social bookmarking within the sphere of collaborative social networking. The emergent read/write nature of the Internet has made possible the widespread adoption of these numerous social networking technologies into the instructional process. They enable and encourage active participation in the development of shared online resources while fostering collaboration among learners.
11:00 am to 12:00 pm: Visual Learning Technologies (Concept Mapping, Games)
This session will cover Inspiration (a concept mapping tool) and educational gaming software that take very little time to learn and adopt for instruction. Concept mapping software and games increase and expand student creative efforts, interest and motivation in the subject matter, as well as their higher order thinking skills and content retention.
1:00 pm to 2:00 pm: Classroom Instructional Technologies (Clickers, Interactive Pen Display-SMART panel)
This session will look at the use of Personal Response Systems (Clicker Technology) and Sympodium Interactive Pen Displays (SMART panels) that truly bring interactivity to life in a classroom environment. Clickers and Interactive Pen Displays create an active learning and teaching experience by providing faculty with instant student feedback, slide annotation, external file access, spotlighting and notes saving capability during presentation.
2:30 pm to 4:00 pm: Self-Paced Learning Technologies (Podcasting, Streaming, Short Focused Tutorials)
This session will discuss a number of technologies including podcasting, video/audio streaming, short focused tutorials, and online interactive modules that support self-paced learning. These self-paced learning tools encourage anytime-anyplace acquisition of skills and knowledge, allow for different learning styles, and let learners make their own decisions about when, where, what, and how quickly to learn.
