Community College Relationships: Future Challenges and Opportunities

This is the twelfth in the series of department chair development workshops sponsored by the Office of the Provost and organized by the Department Chair Development Workshop Planning group. The purposes of the session are to discuss the changing landscape of community college and four-year university relationships at the national and state levels; to examine current opportunities and challenges and their implications for NIU and its community college partners; and to describe NIU’s role in the Pascal Universities Regional Engagement Project.

Anne C. Kaplan is NIU’s vice president for administration and university outreach. She has been a university administrator for 35 years and was the first appointee to the position now held by Virginia Cassidy. Kaplan spent 11 years in the Provost’s office before moving to the President’s office as Executive Assistant to former President John LaTourette. In her current role, Kaplan oversees NIU’s central computing function (ITS), its central communication units (Public Affairs and Northern Public Radio), and the university’s central outreach and engagement activities. An historian by training, Kaplan has tutored in history at the University of Sussex in England and in the Open University’s interdisciplinary humanities program.

Virginia Cassidy
Virginia R. Cassidy is vice provost for academic planning and development at NIU. Her major responsibilities address program quality including the internal review of existing degree programs, the approval of new degrees and other curricular offering, oversight of the assessment of student learning outcomes, and institutional and programmatic accreditation. She serves as the university’s liaison to the Higher Learning Commission and the Illinois Board of Higher Education and represents the Office of the Provost on the NIU Outreach Advisory Committee. Cassidy is also a professor in the School of Nursing and Health Studies.
