Using Cooperative Activities to Promote Learning

Overview:

Participants of this workshop will learn how to use cooperative structures to foster academic achievement, critical thinking, and deeper learning. Dr. Barbara J. Millis will emphasize both relevant theory and the efficient facilitation of group processes. The session will model a cooperative classroom with combinations of direct instruction, interactive group work tied to the session objectives, and whole-class discussion with questions. Participants will experience numerous cooperative structures which are applicable to virtually all disciplines, and can be applied in their classrooms or online environments. Workshop will start with check-in and refreshments from 8 to 8:30 am. Listed below is a brief outline of the workshop.

Barbara Millis

Dr. Barbara Millis is Director of the Excellence in Teaching Program at University of Nevada in Reno. She has published numerous articles and presentations on Cooperative Learning. She is a sought-after workshop presenter and keynoter on topics including cooperative learning, classroom observations, the teaching portfolio, microteaching, academic assessment, syllabus construction and academic games. Millis co-authored Cooperative Learning for Higher Education Faculty and is the author of Using Simulations to Enhance Learning in Higher Education.

Registration Information:

This workshop is open only to faculty and teaching staff (not TA/GA/RAs). Registered participants will receive workshop materials, refreshments, lunch, and a certificate of participation. Advanced registration is required. Register online by completing the registration form below. Please contact the Center if you do not receive a response or an email confirmation of your registration within two working days after submitting your registration. 

Due to the expensive nature of this workshop, limited seats available, and the need for advanced arrangements for food and materials, we request that you register by the deadline and attend the entire workshop. If you register and are unable to attend, please notify the Faculty Development and Instructional Design Center by Friday, January 8, 2007 at the latest, so that someone on the waiting list can be accommodated.
