SMART Grant To Do List:


  1. Complete the FAFSA by March 1 (priority filing date).
    • NIU's School Code is 001737
  2. Check your NIU e-mail account for important messages from the NIU Student Financial Aid Office.
  3. Check your MyNIU account for awarding to be applied to your Bursar account.

National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant (SMART Grant)

The SMART Grant is a need-based grant for students majoring in certain Science and Math based programs to help off-set the cost of education.

Eligibility Requirements

To receive a National SMART Grant, a student must:

  • Receive a Federal Pell Grant during the same award year
  • Be a U.S. citizen
  • Be a full-time undergraduate student in their third or fourth academic year
  • Be pursuing a major in physical, life or computer sciences, mathematics, technology, engineering or a critical foreign language (a complete list of eligible majors)
  • Have a 3.0 GPA as of the end of the second award year and continue to maintain a 3.0 GPA that must be checked prior to the beginning of each payment period (semester)

Grant Funds

National SMART Grants can pay up to $4,000 for each of the third and fourth academic years.
