SMART Grant To Do List:
- Complete the FAFSA by March 1 (priority filing date).
- NIU's School Code is 001737
- Check your NIU e-mail account for important messages from the NIU Student Financial Aid Office.
- Check your MyNIU account for awarding to be applied to your Bursar account.
National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant (SMART Grant)
The SMART Grant is a need-based grant for students majoring in certain Science and Math based programs to help off-set the cost of education.
Eligibility Requirements
To receive a National SMART Grant, a student must:
- Receive a Federal Pell Grant during the same award year
- Be a U.S. citizen
- Be a full-time undergraduate student in their third or fourth academic year
- Be pursuing a major in physical, life or computer sciences, mathematics, technology, engineering or a critical foreign language (a complete list of eligible majors)
- Have a 3.0 GPA as of the end of the second award year and continue to maintain a 3.0 GPA that must be checked prior to the beginning of each payment period (semester)
Grant Funds
National SMART Grants can pay up to $4,000 for each of the third and fourth academic years.
