Applying for Financial Aid

MAP Grant funding for 2017-2018 school year closes on 12/21/16

If you wish to be eligible for an Illinois MAP Grant for the 2017-2018 school year, you must file your 2017-2018 FAFSA by Wednesday, December 21, 2016.  The FAFSA will require NIU’s FAFSA school code (001737) and your 2015 income tax return information.

Other aid will be available if you file after December 21, 2016, however that is the last day for MAP consideration.

FAFSA Tips:

  • Select the Correct Year
Between October 2016 and June 2017 both the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 FAFSAs will be available.
    • 2016-2017 – used for Fall 2016, Spring 2017, and Summer 2017
    • 2017-2018 – used for Fall 2017, Spring 2018, and Summer 2018
  • Use 2015 income tax information for 2016-2017 and 2017-2018.
For most students who have or will submit both a 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 FAFSA, questions regarding income and questions sourced from a federal tax return must be the same on both year’s FAFSAs.

Unless the student’s or parents’ (if applicable) marital status has changed or the parent a dependent student is required to include on the FAFSA has changed, the questions related to 2015 earned income and taxes paid must be the same on the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 FAFSAs if both are filed.

While completing the 2017-2018 FAFSA application, pop-up indicators will be triggered if the 2015 income/ tax information entered does not match the corresponding questions on the 2016-2017 FAFSA application. A message will inform the applicant that the information is different and prompt the student and/or parent to make the necessary changes. If there is not a 2016-2017 FAFSA application for the student in the federal system, no pop-up indicators will occur.
    • If a 2017-2018 FAFSA is submitted with income/tax differences from 2016-2017, and there is no difference in the student or parent marital status, the FAFSA may be flagged by the U.S. Department of Education for conflicting information.
    • Schools will be required to collect data to determine which FAFSA is correct and update the other.  Note:  Even previously disbursed 2016-2017 aid may be subject to change.
  • Check your NIU email and MyNIU frequently.
Stay Informed. It is critical to monitor your NIU email and MyNIU after you file the 2017-2018 FAFSA – you may have additional 2016-2017 requirements
