If you wish to be eligible for an Illinois MAP Grant for the 2017-2018 school year, you must file your 2017-2018 FAFSA by Wednesday, December 21, 2016. The FAFSA will require NIU’s FAFSA school code (001737) and your 2015 income tax return information.
Other aid will be available if you file after December 21, 2016, however that is the last day for MAP consideration.
Last year President Obama announced a three month earlier start to the FAFSA application cycle making the FAFSA available each October 1st for the next academic year. In addition to the FAFSA cycle beginning earlier, the tax information used to complete the application will be from one tax/calendar year earlier than in the past.
This means the 2017-2018 FAFSA will be available beginning October 1, 2016 and will use 2015 tax return information.
Because students and parents will use previously submitted tax information for the FAFSA application, the new FAFSA filing cycle and use of earlier income/tax information is sometimes referred to as “Prior-Prior Year” (PPY).
