Chorus Day

High School Clinics

Northern Illinois University’s School of Music and the Office of External Programs for the College of Visual and Performing Arts are pleased to present this year’s schedule of music events for high school jazz bands, choirs, women’s choirs, string orchestras, and individual jazz players. We hope you can join us this year in the NIU Music Building for at least one of these events.

These events are non-competitive and give directors and students the chance to share ideas with other musicians, with NIU faculty and students, and with guest clinicians. NIU ensembles perform for the students during the day. Each ensemble performs on the stage of the Concert Hall and is critiqued by NIU faculty, and for certain events, by a guest clinician. Directors receive a recording of his or her ensemble’s performance.

Clarinet Cornucopia, while not a high school clinic, welcomes high school clarinetists. The theme in 2009 is Clarinets in Motion and the date is April 4.

Registration deadline: The deadline is one calendar month before the event; after that date, call to see if there is space. Events may fill prior to the deadline.

Note: If you have a commitment from your school for funding, but do not yet have the money, send a note about this when you send the completed form. The registration fee is due two weeks before the event. An information packet with a final schedule will be mailed soon after the registration deadline.

Early registration is recommended, as these events fill fast.

Schedules, maps, and information packets will be mailed 2-3 weeks before each event.

New Arrangement for the Director’s Lunch: As the Pheasant Room no longer exists and the replacement lunch service in that space is inadequate for our needs, we will be catering our directors’ lunches in the Music Building. These lunches are gratis, but are only for the directors and one accompanist for the choral groups. Space is limited. Please indicate on the registration form whether you are able to attend.

More Information: Contact the Office of External Programs with questions. You can reach director Deborah Booth at dbooth@niu.edu or administrative assistant Renee Page at rpage@niu.edu. Thomas Kapraun handles repertoire lists and can be contacted at tkapraun@niu.edu. The phone number is (815) 753-1450.

Note: Beginning this year, all information, as well as the registration form (to print and mail or fax) are only available online.
