Learn to play the steelpan in a fun ensemble setting. This instrument has a sound like no other and lends itself to the performance of many different types of music. Instruments in one of the six voices that range from soprano to bass are assigned to students, who learn to play several pieces in the traditional calypso style, as well as classical, rock and rhythm and blues. No previous experience on the instrument is needed, but it is recommended that students be able to read music. Liam Teague, director of the NIU Steelband, will be at one rehearsal to teach a master class.
